Discover and learn about ecosystem regeneration<\/h2>\n

Join us on select Saturdays at a local organic farm to learn about regenerative agriculture and land use, as well as our local ecosystem. You will meet and engage with experts in a variety of fields while spending time outdoors.<\/p>\n

Each event starts with a guided farm tour, highlighting a variety of zones and the regenerative activities taking place in each. This is followed by a themed workshop or interactive lecture, with topics varying each time. These sessions offer you the opportunity to gain deeper insights into different concepts and challenges impacting our local area and ecosystem.<\/p>\n

Saturdays at the Farm takes place monthly at Quinta Vale da Lama<\/a>, near Lagos, Portugal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Soil Health and Testing<\/h4>\n

Learn how to determine soil health in this interactive session!<\/em><\/p>\n

Healthy soil is the foundation of ecosystem restoration and regeneration. It supports increased and healthy food production, captures and maintains water, increases biodiversity, and sequesters more carbon. But what do we mean by “healthy soil”, and how can we measure it?<\/p>\n

This session will give an overview of the composition of soil and then share some of the ways we can assess and monitor its health over time. You will learn the basics of soil health monitoring and evaluation, including key metrics and ways to collect the data. Then we will go to a few locations around the farm and collect and analyze some samples using several of these techniques. You will get your hands dirty as you engage in data collection as a citizen scientist!<\/p>\n

Mud Valley Institute is participating in the\u00a0 ECHO program, a citizen science project focusing on European soil health. Citizen scientists from around Europe will learn about soil health and participate in collecting data that will then be analyzed and loaded into an open-source database.<\/p>\n

If you attend this session and wish to participate in the ECHO program you will receive your own soil sampling kit to take home and collect samples from your own site. You will use a mobile app to receive immediate feedback on the soil collected. Mud Valley Institute will then collect the sample and send it away for analysis. Water Retention Techniques for Ecosystem Restoration<\/h4>\n

Living in a semi-arid region that is becoming warmer and drier due to climate change presents us with significant challenges, especially in regard to water availability and retention.<\/p>\n

This session will focus on several local ecosystem restoration projects who are working to address their water challenges and highlight the water-focused actions they are taking in response. You will learn about the watersheds of the southwestern Algarve, the concept of “slowing, sinking, and spreading” water, techniques to improve water retention, and specific examples of how some of the members of the Ecosystem Restoration Community of the Southwestern Algarve<\/a> are addressing their water challenges.<\/p>\n

Our presenters will include Jeroen Boss of Quinta do Horizonte and Pedro Texeira from Salema Eco Camp. Each will share some of the work they have done at their locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Soil Health and World Soil Day<\/h4>\n

World Soil Day is 5 December each year, and so this session will be dedicated to several topics related to soil and soil health.<\/p>\n

After the guided farm tour, the workshop will feature two sessions. First, Dr. Cristina Cruz, an agroecologist from the University of Lisboa, will give an overview of what soil is and its importance to our ecosystem and planet and how to establish healthy soils. Then we will move to the composting area of Quinta Vale da Lama. There, Ricardo Gomes, a regenerative farmer, will give an overview of the composting operation at the farm. You will learn the different composting methods in use and how the whole system works together to create healthy soil at a large scale.<\/p>\n

Woven Palm Leaf Crafting<\/h4>\n

Palm leaf weaving is a centuries old crafting tradition in the Algarve, using the abundant, naturally growing palm leaves of the region to create strong, beautiful, and useful items. In the past, many items around the house and outside were made by hand using these dried palm leaves, including baskets, mats, brooms, and decorations. This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation, and we are excited to share it with you at this event.<\/p>\n

In this session, you will learn about the palm leaves and their importance to the region, how they are used by both humans and animals, the process of palm leaf harvesting and weaving, and take part in creating a small craft project to take home with you<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Manuela Caneco<\/strong> will facilitate this session. She is a native of Bar\u00e3o de S\u00e3o Miguel, near Lagos, and has dedicated many years to teaching and exhibiting her locally inspired arts and crafts. She hosts a variety of training classes focused on regional crafts, and regularly exhibits at art shows around the region.<\/p>\n

How Wild Bees Adapt to Human Modifed Environments<\/h4>\n

Learn about these pollinators and how they are responding to a changing world.<\/em><\/p>\n

In this workshop, you will learn about wild bees, their essential role as pollinators, and the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world. You will learn how researchers study wild bees in both field and laboratory, and together, we will observe pollinators in action through hands-on activities. By connecting genetics, ecology, and conservation, this session will provide a broader understanding of the evolutionary challenges pollinators face today.<\/p>\n

This session will be facilitated by Andr\u00e9 Filipe Henriques<\/strong>, a biologist at the Centre for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes (CE3C), at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, specializing in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology.<\/p>\n

Ecosystem Restoration for the Barlavento Bioregion<\/h4>\n

Learn about regeneration work being done around the world with our partner organization, Ecosystem Restoration Communities<\/a> (ERC), as well as here in the Barlavento region of the Algarve. We will first be joined by John D. Liu, the founder of the ERC and a visionary ecologist, who will share his thoughts and insights into ecosystem restoration and how we can all work to make a difference. Then we will host a collaborative session with a variety of local stakeholders to begin co-creating impactful, regenerative actions for our bioregion.<\/p>\n

* Please note: The format of this edition will be different than other Saturdays at the Farm<\/strong>, as there will not<\/strong> be a guided farm tour. Instead we will have two sessions focused on ecosystem restoration and taking action to generate local impact.<\/p>\n
